Taking tomorrow off to work on the boat. Should be a really nice day.
Currently sitting in the driveway where the Dean of our school lives. I set up the wireless network for her at her house and they're having problems, so I'm on a service call... they're not home yet (I'm here early) and I'm within range of their wireless router and know their security password (after all, I set it up)... so, here I sit in their driveway posting on my blog.
Technology is pretty cool sometimes. At least I can surf the web here while I'm waiting I guess.
Slow couple weeks really. It's funny how just as soon as we get Scott hired we have nothing to work on. Though it's not really that surprising since today is the first day of finals for all the ants... er, kids... er, students here.
Summer in Columbia is hot. Don't get me wrong. But there aren't as many students... so traffic is better, parking is better, restaurants aren't as busy, etc, etc... it's almost like we own the town again.
But, albeit indirectly, they sign our paychecks so it's all good. Besides, crowded bars are often more fun than empty ones, right?
That was a joke... I rarely see the inside of a bar anymore. Flying Saucer excluded. Guess that comes with age though... still hard to believe that in a couple months I'll no longer be in my twenties. I wonder if they come on your actual birthday to take away your admission pass to get into Five Points or if they wait until you first try to use it!
Anyway, nothing else really going on. Still haven't brought the boat around to the house to repair the driver's seat. Hopefully we can use it more this summer than last, in spite if the crazy gas prices. The people we'll be tailgating with this season are getting a pontoon and they have a wet slip on the lake, so they're out there pretty often. I think we'll end up having a few friends out there a couple times this summer which will be nice. In fact, I may take this Friday off work and spend the day working on the boat instead since it's supposed to be only 80 degrees and sunny. We'll have to see though because my boss has been out a lot lately with his back acting up again.
Had fun last Saturday night at Wings and Ale... Tokyo Joe had a pretty good show. Loud, so i guess that means I'm getting old! Christina didn't have as much fun Sunday though and probably won't be drinking any Yingling beer again for a while. ;-)
Scott started here in Public Health Monday and I think he will work out pretty well. He's familiar with a lot of things already as far as working on computers is concerned... basically the only thing he will need to learn is the structure, departments, and people we have here which is something everyone has to go through at a new job.
Tonight we're heading to Flying Saucer... decided to have a late-notice happy hour this week. We've been talking about setting up Dave with someone and getting him out for a happy hour with a decent sized group is a good way to get the ball rolling I suppose.
Also, it's been a while since I've updated my beer list from Flying Saucer... I'm at 118 beers... getting closer to that 200 mark. Click the link below to see the list:
This has been a week of pain it seems, and I'm not talking about our trips to the dentist.
I went in for a cavity and cleaning Wednesday and Christina went in for her initial appointment, x-rays, cleaning yesterday. I didn't have one ounce of pain on my visit, which was great. And then Christina found out she doesn't have any cavities or gum problems or anything. Saves us a good bit of money that I figured we'd have to spend on her teeth like we did on mine last year. Plus, with our new Dental Plus insurance most of the bill is covered which is nice.
No, the pain I'm talking about is basically just whining I guess. Sunday was yard work day so I started off the week sore. Dave and I got back to the gym this week starting Monday after he got back from Cancun. So, it's been a while since our last workout - nearly two weeks. Monday killed us... Tuesday I decided to get a bunch of stuff done around the house and ride the bike for a while... made the legs nice and sore. Wednesday it's the gym again - always fun after a dentist appointment. Decided to ride the bike there before lifting and set it on a pretty high resistance... the legs loved that. So, we took yesterday off... since of course today is gym day again. Working out when your whole body is sore already isn't much fun.
However, things aren't nearly as bad since I've started taking creatine with my protein mix. It basically lets your muscles go longer without failing and recovery times are much better. So I guess I could be much sorer.
Not sure what's on tap for this weekend. The Tokyo Joe thing I mentioned last week is actually this Saturday, so we may go there to see them tomorrow night. I need to bring the boat by the house and fix that second seat and get it cleaned up in general. Not like we'll get much use out of it with the current gas prices, but since we're going to have a gorgeous 90-degree, sunny weekend, it'll be a good time to bring it over and work on it some.
Anyway, I think I'm coffee-bound this morning... didn't want to get up, don't want to be at work, and have way too much to do here today. Scott starts Monday, which is going to be great. The sooner he can get up to speed and we can get caught up the better!
Busy so far this week. Been working on a backup plan for our ever-increasing number of servers now that our backup server is up and running. You have to work around certain time windows after hours to get the backups done, so I've been staggering the different servers for different times of the night and weekends. It'll be nice having in-house backups though instead of just our off-site backups that we get from the University.
However, off-site backups are still important in an overall backup plan. Just because I have the server and have it also backed up to another machine in our server room does not mean I'm protected if the building burns down. Unfortunately, the data from all of those servers totals up to a LOT of space used on our backup server... transferring that large amount of data over USC's network to the building where our central IT group for USC is located is proving to be difficult. Our backup server will hold between 75-100 gigabytes of data we need replicated and the average run of their software transfers 4.5 gigabytes per hour from our building to theirs. Easy to see the problem when you do the math.
Anyway, not much going on other than work. We had a fun weekend... did something Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Carolina's basketball game was Thursday, we hit flying saucer Friday and ran into a couple of co-workers and ended up having a 4-5 hour happy hour there, and Saturday we went to Brian and Debra's for the NCAA tourney games.
This weekend is the annual Garnet and Black Spring Game for the football team. Though the forecast is for a 50% chance of thunderstorms. We may go, we may not... and if we go, who knows how long we'll end up staying for. Brian and Debra said they're going out Saturday night to Wings & Ale here in Columbia because Tokyo Joe is playing. That's the band we went to see last summer in the park when I posted a few pictures of their concert there. Debra knows the singer from high school so they go watch them play from time to time. We may go, we may not... Can you feel the commitment to our weekend plans?? :)
